To accompany the newly adopted New York State Social Studies Framework(http://www.engageny.org/resource/new-york-state-k-12-social-studies-framework)
the New York State Education Department issued a call today for writers and reviewers for the New York Social Studies Toolkit Project.
The Toolkit is intended as a resource to help districts and K-12 teachers craft instructional units that reflect the robust nature of the new Framework and a shift toward more inquiry-driven social studies instruction that integrates social studies concepts and practices with Common Core Literacy Standards in a way that is both rigorous and engaging for students.
The project is specifically looking for applicants on two levels:
1. as writers to craft one exemplar curriculum unit and five compelling questions per grade level.
2. as members of a Teacher Collaborative Council (TCC) to read and respond to the work of writers.
More information on the project, a timeline for the work, and application information and forms can be found through Binghamton University at:
This work, created by teachers and for teachers, will be piloted in NY classrooms over the next year. The project will be completed by June 2015.
Social studies educators are strongly encouraged to apply for this opportunity to shape the work. Applications must be submitted by June 27, 2014.
